〔１〕関係副詞
関係副詞は接続詞と副詞のニつの働きをします。
例
１．Gifu is the city. +　l was born there (here).
→ Gifu is the city where l was born.　(岐阜は私が生まれた市です｡)

２．I remember the day. +　He came to see me then.
→ I rememder the day when he came to see me.　(私は彼が私に会いに来た日を覚えでいます｡)

上の例でわかるように、where, when は、それぞれ二つずつの文を結びつけている点で接続詞の働きをしており、又同時にthere (here) 、thenという副詞の代りにもなっている。

＊where、 when 以外の関係副詞
関係副詞にはこの他、理由を表わす why、方法を表わす how があり、that も when、 why、how の代りに関係副詞として用いる。又関係副詞の先行詞が省略されることがある。(関係副詞は一見して、例えば why は理由を表わすことが、はっきりわかるからである｡)
例
１．That is (the reason) why l came here. (それが私がここへ来た理由です｡)

２．I don't like the way (how) he did it. (私は彼がそれをした方法が気に入りません｡)
〔the way how の場合は先行詞の the way と関係副詞の how のどちらかを略すのが普通｡〕

＊関係副詞は前置詞付き関係代名詞に置きかえることが出来る。これは前置詞＋代名詞は副詞句になれるからである｡
例
That is the reason for which he is angry. (それが彼の怒っている理由です｡)

＊同様に where 及び when＝in (又は at ) which、how＝in which (方法につける前置詞は in｡)

〔２〕関係副詞の継続（或いは連続）用法
関係副詞 where と when には継続（或いは連続）用法がある。
例
１．Please wait till six o'clock, when I will be back. （6時まで待って下さい、その時刻には帰って来ますから｡）

２．Yesterday, Father and I went to the Nagara River, where we swam about two hours. （昨日父と私は長良川へ行っでそこて約２時間冰ぎました｡）

＊ why や how には継続（或いは連続）用法はない。

	the reason か why のどちらかを省略するか、あるいはｔｈｅ reason that にするのが正しいという説がある。この場合は the reason を省略すると What is why・・・？ となってしまうので、略すわけにはいかない。（大塚高信『英文法辞典』p.789 参照）
